What is an understory? The understory is the part of the forest that grows under the tree canopy. It's a shady area made up of a mixture of plants which usually need more light to leaf out and grow.
And that's what our project is about. Shining a light on how a diverse group of rural residents in the forested Sierra foothills of California are creating new paths toward community revitalization.
This blog is about community, collaboration, and change. It's a space to bring together a network of people who are interested in the community renewal efforts of the Blue Mountain towns of West Point, Wilseyville, Glencoe, and Railroad Flat in

Hey Tina,
It's great to see images of your pals! You mention you feel the composition is really good--could you explain what you mean specifically? One thing we want to develop in our time together on this project is our ability to describe how photography communicates our vision and why we choose to take certain photos. Maybe you can practice with this photo by telling us more what you like about the composition (angle? level? distance? lighting?)
For me as a viewer, I'd like to have you be closer to the subjects. I'm not sure you need all that headroom above Courtney and Belinda. And all the pavement on the side of them doesn't seem to say much about them or where they are--I'm not sure you need that either. And there is a tree growing out of one of their heads! When you get a chance, trying taking another photo of them but from a closer distance and somewhere (location) that tells us something more about them.
